It was just after 1:00pm on Sunday, February 24th when Team Manager, Mary Holloway and Mission Staff, Jean Stoyles welcomed the first athletes as they stepped through the doors of Delta St. John’s. These arrivals were much more significant than the first registrations they marked the culmination of over a years hard work by athletes, coaches, mission staff, family members and staff.
Sunday was full of hugs and high fives as Team Newfoundland and Labrador members were united for the first time since the provincial team training camp in August of 2007. It was a day full of the joy of reuniting with old friends and excitement for the journey that lay ahead. After a couple of hours to tell some stories and prep for the next days travel the team headed over to the Sundance to have a meal and take part in their first official function as Team Newfoundland and Labrador.
The team was treated to a great meal by The Sundance courtesy of longtime Progress Club members and Special Olympics supporters Bull Cook and Gary Haynes. It was not long after that when the first of many special guests showed up to meet the team and wish them good luck.
