The First Skate Ever…and Divisioning Day

The First Skate
Wednesday was the teams busiest to date with all sports being active. The day started off with breakfast at 6:00am and the floor hockey team catching the first bus at 7:00am. Soon after that the rest of the team was on the road and none of them returned to the hotel until after 7:00pm that night.

Figure Skating
The most exciting and momentous event of the day was the first ever skate at a National Games by a Newfoundland and Labrador athlete. Mark Ellsworth of Corner Brook took to the ice to complete his compulsories. Mark did a great job and will be entering his short program in 4th place. Mark is looking forward to completing his program on Friday because as he readily admits his likes skating his program much more than he likes compulsories.

Both floor hockey and snowshoeing had divisioning rounds today.

Floor Hockey
The Floor Hockey divisioning saw them pitted against teams of various skill levels in mini games to help gauge their relative level of ability. Following the divisioning round teams will be placed in divisions that will be set for round robin and medal round play. Team NL will find out on Thursday morning what their schedule is and who their opponents will be for the remainder of the week.

Snowshoeing
All six snowshoeing athletes ran in divisioning races on Wednesday. The coaching staff was very pleased with the results and are really looking forward to the first medal races which are to take place on Thursday. Three athletes (Silas Smith, Justin Lahey and Tony Krystis) will be competing in the 100m finals.

Cross Country Skiing
Today was a practice day for the skiers. That had a chance to try out the course they will be skiing on for the rest of the week and get a better sense for the conditions.

Friday's report will be full of results as all of our sports will be active and there is the possibility that we may have our first medals shining on this page by this time tomorrow night.
