SONL Excited About New Provincial Sport Strategy

Sport in Newfoundland and Labrador made a huge step forward this past spring when the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Recreation, Tom Hedderson, released the first ever Recreation and Sport Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador. The strategy provides a groundwork for a province in which all citizens are able, within a safe, equitable, ethical and accountable framework, to access and participate in recreation and sport activities.

This is a very exciting time for Special Olympics, as the strategy has committed to engage the disability community in developing an action plan to increase the involvement of persons with a disability in recreation and sport.

As a result of the strategy, Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador’s government funding has nearly tripled. We look forward to working with the Minister and his staff in creating a province that will provide increased sport opportunities for individuals with an intellectual disability.
